Out-of-Hands Punt

A high-clearing kicking restart out of hands designed to achieve maximum distance upfield into the opponent’s half. While historically the primary method of distribution, modern coaching frameworks treat the punt as a situational tool rather than a default strategy.

  1. Grip & Stance: Hold the ball waist-high with your guiding hand supporting the side; plant your non-kicking foot firmly on the turf.
  2. The Drop: Drop the ball straight down toward your kicking foot. Never toss the ball upward, as a high toss ruins trajectory timing.
  3. The Strike: Swing your kicking leg with a rigidly locked ankle, striking the center of the ball on your laces just below waist height.
  4. Follow-Through: Follow through smoothly in the direction of the target, landing forward safely on your kicking foot.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct fundamental punt breakdowns immediately.

Tossing the Ball Up: Tossing the ball into the air causes it to drop unpredictably, leading to mistimed kicks and shins. Enforce dropping it straight down.

Loose Ankle / Floppy Foot: Hitting the ball with a loose ankle hurts the foot and sends the ball spinning wildly off target. Cue: Make your foot a solid block.

Leaning Backward: Leaning back during the swing sends the ball straight up into the air instead of forward. Enforce a forward chest posture.
