Breakaways (1v1)

Managing 1v1 duels when an attacker penetrates the defensive line. Closing down space, setting position, and executing block or spread saves requires immense patience and spatial awareness.

  1. Close Distance on Heavy Touches: Close the distance rapidly only while the attacker’s head is down or their touch is heavy. Stop short of lunging.
  2. Angle Control & Setting: Bisect the angle between the ball and the center of the goal. Shorten your stride and set balanced as the attacker prepares to strike.
  3. Barrier Expansion: Drop into a K-block or star spread to maximize surface coverage, reducing the available goal frame.
  4. Patience & Timing: Maintain extreme patience, staying on your feet as long as possible to force the attacker’s decision rather than committing prematurely.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common breakdown habits immediately.

Lunging Too Early: Committing to a dive too soon allows the attacker to easily round the goalkeeper. Enforce staying upright and patient.

Stopping Too Close / Getting Chipped: Rushing right up to the attacker’s feet leaves room for a chip shot. Stop roughly one to two yards away, maintaining a balanced ready frame.

Narrow Stance: Standing tall and narrow makes it easy for low shots to pass through. Expand the base into a block shape.
