Punching and High Clearance

Aggressively clearing lofted balls, crosses, and aerial duels by punching the ball out rather than claiming it. Punching is deployed when a catch is contested, visibility is blocked, or heavy traffic makes secure cradling impossible.

  1. Assessment & Flight Reading: Read the ball’s flight path, velocity, and surrounding defensive/attacking traffic before committing off the goal line.
  2. Explosive Takeoff: Launch off a single foot, driving the opposite knee upward for protection and vertical lift.
  3. Fist Choice & Contact Point:
    • Two-Fist Punch: Use for maximum power and safety, locking thumbs across the outside of clenched fists and striking with the flat surface of the knuckles.
    • Single-Fist Punch: Use only when maximum extension reach is required to get to a ball just out of two-handed range.
  4. Directional Clearance: Strike the underside-center of the ball to drive it high and distant toward the flanks, entirely away from the central goal zone.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common punching breakdowns immediately.

Punching Back Into Center: Striking the top of the ball sends it straight down into the middle of the box. Ensure contact is made on the underside-center.

Loose Wrists / Open Hands: Slapping or open-palm punching lacks distance and control. Enforce tight fists and locked wrists.

Silent Action: Failing to call out before punching can cause heavy collisions with own defenders. Always shout an early verbal command.
