Contour Catch (W-Catch)

The contour catch is the primary hand configuration used for shots arriving between chest and head height. It is specifically designed to stop high-velocity balls from slipping through to the face or torso by matching the ball’s natural curvature.

  1. Proactive Reach: Extend arms forward to meet the ball well in front of the body line. Never wait for the ball to reach your chest.
  2. Formation: Thumbs and index fingers should nearly touch to form a clear “W” shape behind the ball’s contour.
  3. Spread: Ensure fingers are spread wide to maximize the surface area across the back of the ball.
  4. Absorption: Give slightly with the elbows on impact to cushion the velocity, pulling the ball into a tight chest lock immediately upon securing.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Address these common breakdowns to prevent rebounds and injuries.

Thumbs Too Far Apart: If thumbs flare, the ball can punch through to the face. Remind them: Keep thumbs connected.

Catching on Chest: If the ball hits the chest before the hands, it will bounce away. Remind them: Catch it out front.

Rigid Arms: Hard hands create rebounds. Remind them: Absorb into the elbows.
