Forward Smother

Diving forward into the feet of oncoming attackers to smother loose balls and through-passes. The forward smother is one of the bravest and most effective recovery actions in goalkeeping, shutting down scoring opportunities before a shot can be struck.

  1. Aggressive Approach: Sprint forward toward the loose ball or through-pass, actively evaluating the attacker’s speed and distance.
  2. Lower Center of Gravity: Drop the center of gravity sharply, preparing to slide smoothly along the turf line rather than jumping forward.
  3. Hands Lead the Way: Form a wide hand barrier (W-shape or scoop) and ensure hands lead the head to protect the face and secure the ball.
  4. Slide & Chest Lock: Slide through the ball on your lateral thigh and torso, pulling the ball immediately into a tight chest lock to prevent rebounds.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common breakdown habits immediately to prevent injuries.

Leading with Head: Sliding head-first without hands protecting the face invites dangerous boot collisions. Enforce hands lead the head.

Hesitating Mid-Slide: Stopping halfway creates an awkward collision hazard. Emphasize full, committed execution once chosen.

Exposing the Ball: Failing to pull the ball into the chest allows trailing feet to poke it loose. Enforce an immediate chest lock.
