Hand Position & Shape

The mechanical foundation for securing shots, absorbing ball speed, and preventing soft rebounds. Precise hand configurations adapted to ball height maximize surface coverage and ball security.

  1. W-Shape (High & Mid-Height Balls): Bring thumbs nearly touching with index fingers angled upward, forming a supportive “W” shape behind the ball contour.
  2. Cup / Scoop Shape (Low Balls): Face palms forward and upward with pinkies touching, funneling ground balls smoothly in front of the feet.
  3. Attacking Reach: Extend hands proactively forward to meet the ball ahead of the torso line, expanding the defensive surface area.
  4. Shock Absorption: Use flexible wrists and yielding elbows to absorb velocity, instantly pulling the secured ball into a tight chest lock.

Verbal Cues

Instant Field Triggers: Use short, clear phrases during shooting drills to lock in correct muscle memory.

Catch in front | Soft hands, strong wrists | Pads, not palms

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct fundamental hand shape breakdowns immediately to prevent dangerous rebounds.

Palms Stiff / Flat Hands: Fix high-velocity deflections by forcing finger spread and pad contact.

Thumbs Flared Out Wide: Prevent the ball from slipping through the hands into the face by keeping thumbs close and aligned.
