High Dive

High dives represent the apex of aerial shot-stopping. This maneuver requires an explosive vertical and diagonal airborne launch to parry or catch shots aimed at the upper corners.

  1. Positioning: Execute quick crossover or drop steps to align the body directly under the ball’s projected path.
  2. Explosive Takeoff: Plant and drive explosively off the jumping leg while driving the non-takeoff knee forcefully upward to maximize vertical lift.
  3. Reach & Contact:
    • To Catch: Use both hands in a “W” shape to secure the ball.
    • To Parry: Use the top hand to deflect the ball over the bar or wide of the post.
  4. Absorption: Cushion the descent onto the lateral torso with arms folded safely across the body to protect the midsection.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common airborne breakdowns immediately.

Trying to Catch Everything: If the shot is high-velocity, catching can lead to dangerous spills. Teach them to parry over the bar if they cannot firmly “W-catch.”

Landing on Stomach/Elbows: Landing flat causes breath-taking impact. Enforce a rolling landing across the side of the hip/thigh.

Lack of Knee Drive: Without the knee drive, the goalkeeper loses critical inches of vertical reach. Enforce Drive the knee.
