High Contour Catch

The High Contour Catch is used to secure balls arriving above head height—such as crosses, corners, or high looping shots—at the absolute maximum point of extension. Securing the ball in the air prevents attackers from challenging for a header.

  1. Tracking & Timing: Track the flight path of the ball early, calculating its descent to time the takeoff off a single, explosive leg.
  2. Vertical Drive & Protection: Drive the non-jumping knee upward to generate vertical lift and create a physical shield to protect the midsection from incoming players.
  3. Full Extension & Apex Catch: Extend arms straight up and slightly forward, meeting the ball at the absolute peak of the jump.
  4. Hand Shape: Form a tight “W” shape slightly underneath and behind the ball to arrest its downward and forward momentum before pulling it down.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common aerial breakdowns immediately to prevent dangerous spilled chances.

Catching on the Way Down: Waiting for the ball to drop allows attackers to win the header. Enforce jumping upward to meet it at the peak.

Bent Elbows at Contact: Bending arms sacrifices reach and security. Ensure full vertical extension.

Clapping the Ball: Slapping the sides causes drops. Remind them to keep hands behind the ball contour.
