Ground Handling (Scoop & Basket)

Securing rolling ground balls and waist-height shots safely is the bedrock of goalkeeping. Using proper body-barrier techniques ensures that even if hands fail, the body acts as a reliable secondary wall.

  1. Scoop Catch (Ground Balls): Lower body into a squat or drop the trailing knee to the turf directly behind the line of the ball, creating a solid wall.
  2. Hand Shape & Funneling: Spread hands low with pinkies touching and palms facing up, funneling the rolling ball smoothly up the shins and forearms.
  3. Basket Catch (Waist-Chest Shots): Bend slightly at the waist and extend forearms forward parallel to the ground with palms facing upward.
  4. Cradle & Lock: Cushion the incoming shot into the soft stomach, folding the shoulders and upper body over the ball to lock it securely in place.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct fundamental breakdown habits immediately.

Elbows Flaring Out: Flared elbows create gaps where low shots can pop free. Cue: Keep elbows tucked to your ribs.

Standing Upright for Low Balls: Reaching down with straight legs risks missed balls trickling underneath. Enforce the knee-down or deep squat.
