Angle Play and Ball-Line

Positioning that keeps the goalkeeper between the ball and the center of the goal, cutting the shooter’s effective target window and maximizing body frame coverage. Mastering angle play turns a full-sized goal into a narrow target.

  1. Locate & Track: Identify the ball’s position and trace the direct line running from the ball to the center of the goal line.
  2. Step on the Line: Step off the goal line along that imaginary path to reduce the shooter’s window, moving forward as pressure increases further upfield.
  3. Maintain Square Posture: Keep shoulders and hips square to the ball line as it moves, making micro-adjustments rather than lunging out of position.
  4. Set & Reset: Maintain a balanced ready stance, resetting your footing after every shift to prepare for a sudden strike or deflection.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common positional breakdowns immediately.

Hugging the Goal Line: Staying glued to the goal line gives the shooter the entire net to aim at. Enforce stepping off the line.

Drifting Off-Center: Following the ball without adjusting for the center of the goal leaves the back post exposed. Cue: Anchor to the middle.

Flat-Footed Shifting: Sliding sideways instead of stepping along the bisection line throws off balance. Enforce controlled diagonal movement.
