Side Contour Catch

The Side Contour Catch is the bridge between a static catch and a full-body dive. It is used for shots arriving between waist and head height that require lateral movement, allowing the goalkeeper to remain on their feet if possible.

  1. The Power Step: Take an explosive lateral step toward the ball’s line of flight. The back foot drives the body; the lead foot sets the platform.
  2. Aggressive Extension: Shoot both hands out to intercept the ball. The “W” shape must be established before the catch is made.
  3. Angle Adjustment: Angle the hands to meet the ball’s trajectory (if the ball is rising, hands rotate slightly under; if falling, rotate over).
  4. Absorption & Recovery: Immediately upon contact, bend the elbows to pull the ball into the chest. This acts as a shock absorber, preventing the ball from bouncing off the hands.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes:

One-Handed Reaches: If they reach with one hand, they lose control. Demand “two hands to the ball.”

“Statue” Feet: Reaching without stepping leaves the keeper off-balance. Enforce the power step.

Stiff Arms: If the ball bounces off their hands, they aren’t absorbing. Cue “elbows to ribs.”
