Sweeping and High-Line Management

Acting as an active participant in defense by reading and intercepting through-balls, protecting the space a high defensive line leaves behind it. The goal is to turn potential goal-scoring opportunities into defensive recoveries.

  1. Constant Scanning: Keep your hips open and body oriented toward the play, scanning between the ball, the attacker, and your own goal.
  2. The Decision: If the pass is played, assess: Am I closer? Is the bounce predictable? If no, prioritize retreating to the goal line.
  3. The Sprint & Clear: If you commit, spring forward aggressively. Use a clean touch to clear the ball toward the touchline or a safe open space.
  4. Immediate Recovery: After the clearance, immediately turn and retreat to goal-side positioning to reset for the next phase of play.

Common Corrections

Targeted Fixes: Correct common sweeping breakdowns immediately.

Hesitation: Starting, stopping, and starting again creates a disaster. If you commit, follow through. If you doubt, retreat early.

Blind Sweeping: Charging out without looking at the center-backs causes collisions. Communication is non-negotiable.

Central Clearances: Clearing the ball into the middle of the field invites an immediate shot on an open goal. Always clear to the wide channels.
